A key strategic difference between sites like Facebook and SL is that the former encourage the sharing of personal information, while the SL environment tends to discourage it. There are advantages and disadvantages to both, but I'd hate to see SL move away from its current approach.

I think we still have a long way to go in converting to adult regions. How far and how fast depends on how much noise the Lindens make about it, and how strict they are in enforcing it. The jump of 120 adult regions overnight from *one* email shows that.

Dew chasers, maybe an Aunt Jemima Griddle Cake...got the microwave at the resale shop too....you really should look into that...the cats are getting Fancy Feast this morning....roasted chicken feast....need to feed the birds and squirrels, so they have something to look at....that would be corn and sunflower seeds and peanuts....when I get some time later today, busy, busy, busy you know....I'll take some pics of the squirrels for you...pouring the first cup of coffee....using a cute little mug, yellow and blue stripes, some red tulips....mmmmm, tasty...walking back down the hallway...really should get that floor finished, but busy, busy, busy.....wonder what Raymond is up to today.......

For a mere $L 1000 you have learned something quite valuable, inexpensively and early on.

Ok, just saw the trailer for Blue Mars on Not Possible IRL . . . and was kind of blown away, not just by the graphics (which ARE amazing), but even more by the promised content, which looks pretty phenomenal. I love the user-generated content in SL, but won't Blue Mars have this, as WELL as the more professionally produced stuff from the Smithsonian, National Geographic, etc., etc.?

So, seriously. Why on earth (or Mars) WOULDN'T I move to Blue Mars when it's finally really open?

The e-mail seems to imply that somewhere on the non-Zindra Mainland I have some parcel description or classified with one or more of the banned adult words in the description. (I think)

LL cannot tell me what these words are or where this parcel is located - but I better fix it before I am suspended some time in September for the offense that cannot be identified.

If you are interested at all in art, museums, education, and that sort of thing, you should keep an eye Not Possible IRL, a blog that features, among much else, some of the most interesting and fantastic sims in SL. These aren't necessarily places for socializing, but they ARE magnificent examples of the kind of thing that SL is, at its best, capable of nurturing.

I am pretty much the same in RL, inworld, and the forums.

In SL I'm a *bit* more extroverted than I am in RL because people are slower to respond. Maybe it's just typing speed. And I do make an effort inworld to talk without thinking.

The big difference with the Forums is the permanency of them. If someone says something stupid, rash, or ill-considered, it becomes permanent as soon as someone quotes you. AND it's easier to misunderstand. Even when I'm reading someone who is as careful a writer as Pep - it is not always clear what the TONE of the message is.

I'm pretty reactive, so if you talk to me, I talk a lot back. But if I'm reading the forum, I laugh or cry or get angry, just like I do when I watch TV. And I stop myself, like maybe 50% of the time, from posting something I *know* I'll regret.

I haven't had much drama of my own, but I get drawn into other people's dramas. I'm trying to back off that. But sometimes I read a contentious thread and form an opinion (they are free and require no special knowledge) and then fight with myself. "Don't post it! Why do you want to step into that?"

I seem to recall that the 850 figure was from Jack, the same Linden who rather surprised some of us when he said he'd only had 10 people tell him they objected to the changes in the first place, and that it referred to the situation during the last week they were accepting tickets; that is, before the email went out and they were so inundated with requests they decided to accept applications for a couple of days extra. So I think the actual final figure will be somewhat higher.

It's important to remember that one ticket may -- and, to my knowledge, frequently did -- represent an application from a group of people who wanted to get full-, half- or quarter-sim together rather than apply for much smaller parcels individually. So 850 (or whatever the final number is) certainly doesn't represent the total number of people actually moving.

Missing inventory wierdness

Thanks, folks.. I have indeed tried both clearing my cache and logging onto Aditi, as I believe the beta grid is now called, but same results.. the Windows viewer downloads the same number of items (about half what the Linux one does) and then doesn't stall.. it stops downloading, the hour glass vanishes, and no matter what I put in search, it doesn't do anything. It really is as if the Windows viewer thinks I've only got half the items the Linux viewer does. The folders are there but they're empty.

It's clearly a local problem, and local to a particular operating system on my machine. I can wear/rez stuff in LInux, log out, and then back in Windows, and it's there still. I guess one fix would be to box all my inventory in Linux and then unpack it in Windows, but that will be a hell of a job and one I want to avoid if I can.

As I said, I'm wondering if a completely clean Windows re-installation would do the trick, but I don't like doing anything drastic when in what are, to me, uncharted waters, for fear of making things worse, and I'm wondering if anyone who knows how viewers and inventory work can guide me. I've put in a support ticket and guess I should wait, but I just wondered.

uninstall SL
delete the shortcut off your desktop
delete any shortcuts from the start menu
delete the folder (as above)
look under both "Program Files" and "Program Files(x86)" if you have a 64 bit version of Windows and delete any Second life folders

Download and install Second Life one final time. That should be it.

I like the idea.
I am sick of botters and their unfair traffic.
I do think good product and having a community group that you keep up with and really make it more then a simple update speaks all the numbers you need.

I find people that bots have a low product quality over all,when i look in search at the high traffic places and visit all i see is a mess of reseller products.

Yes. That's one issue.

However, you can set the land to group, and give them ban/admit lists rights, and no return rights. Then you can have security, and no chance your things get returned. as long as you are sole owner of the group, they cant do anything else.

This reminds me of a super-accelerated version of http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-11420?, which was fixed early-on in the 1.23 release candidate cycle, but maybe there's some overlap in the faulty mechanism. Scanning through the jira comments quickly, I didn't see any debug setting to affect it, but to rule that out, one could hide the settings folder from SL and see if it makes any difference to the behavior.

Another step that may help narrow the problem space could be to open the texture console and see if there's any unusual pattern to what's going on there.

No sorry did not work.

It runs ok in Safe Mode have only been able to set in Control Panel/Display to 1400x1000 in Monitor it does not say the monitor name etc. it says Default monitor.
It does not fail to output in Safe Mode.

Normal running it fails after a few minutes and monitor reports no input.

Prior to failure I get a warning that it has low resolution of 800x600
The monitor wants 1680x1050 w/s.

I have tried another monitor and the output also fails to it.
